NAS Migration and Throughput Optimization

Completed 2025-11

Migrating multi-terabyte datasets between Synology systems while tuning the network for high-throughput transfers.

Synology 10 GbE VLANs SMB NFS

Overview

This project focused on migrating large datasets between Synology NAS systems while ensuring the network could sustain high, reliable transfer speeds.

What I built

  • Migration plan that minimized downtime and data risk
  • Network tuning for storage traffic using a dedicated VLAN
  • Testing and validation of real-world throughput
  • Adjustments for link negotiation issues (5 GbE vs 10 GbE)

Challenges

  • Mixed NIC speeds across devices
  • Avoiding routing bottlenecks for storage traffic
  • Ensuring data integrity during long transfers

Why it matters

Storage systems are only as good as their performance and reliability. This project ensured data was not just moved safely, but moved efficiently.
